taking hand paint to new heights rigging and precision Today's walldogs bring something new to the table. Many of our artists have formal training. They've studied anatomy, typography, color theory, and design fundamentals in art school. Others come from graffiti and street art, where they've honed their skills on the streets and developed a deep understanding of the power of visibility. What unites them is not just fearlessness in the face of sketchy heights or tricky surfaces; it's a passion for the analog process. Despite being deeply plugged into technology and influenced by social media, our painters are drawn to the tactile, physical nature of painting by hand outdoors. In fact, that digital saturation makes them appreciate this slower, more intentional medium even more. They know they're not just making something beautiful—they're crafting moments that stop people in their tracks. That sparks conversations. That creates memories. - The High Line, DEREK FORDJOUR
The High Line < Back DEREK FORDJOUR Overview Service Public Art industry Art & Culture markets New York Wall(s) 1 Wall impressions N/A For the fourth year in a row, we returned to The High Line to hand paint a monumental public artwork, this time Backbreaker Double by Derek Fordjour , commissioned by High Line Art. Stretching across a wall adjacent to the High Line at 22nd Street, the mural depicts two Black marching band drum majors performing the iconic drum major backbend, an athletic and ceremonial salute rooted in the traditions of historically Black colleges and universities. The figures command the wall with confidence and precision, embodying pride, ritual, and showmanship. At the same time, their contorted forms sit on the edge of physical possibility, revealing the tension between spectacle, expectation, and the unseen labor behind performance. Known for work that examines power, visibility, and performance, Fordjour often draws from African American cultural traditions, pageantry, and history. His paintings and installations layer vivid color, pattern, and symbolism to explore how bodies are celebrated, scrutinized, and pushed under public gaze. Backbreaker Double continues this exploration, using repetition and scale to amplify both the beauty and the strain embedded in moments of public display. Translating that complexity to an exterior wall presented a unique challenge. Fordjour’s studio practice relies heavily on layered materials, texture, and rhythm, elements that don’t easily map onto a single painted surface. Working closely with the artist and his studio, Fordjour Studio, we developed strategies to recreate that sense of depth and movement through paint alone, carefully studying how his layers interact and how the circular forms establish tempo across the composition. Throughout the process, we collaborated hand-in-hand with High Line Art and Derek Fordjour Studio aligning on color systems, paint builds, and sequencing to ensure the final work preserved the energy, texture, and visual cadence of the original concept. Every approach, from material choices to execution methods, was reviewed and approved together, allowing the mural to stay true to Fordjour’s vision while meeting the demands of scale, durability, and public exposure. Fordjour’s vibrant palette and mirrored figures radiate unity and joy, while the mural’s scale invites viewers to slow down and sit with the complexity of what they are witnessing. Painted entirely by hand by our team over the course of a one-week installation, the work came to life in full view of the park, allowing visitors to experience the artwork as a process rather than just a finished moment. Projects like this are why we love working on The High Line year after year. The platform’s deep support for artists and commitment to ambitious public work are values we genuinely believe in. As artists ourselves, we’re proud to support fellow creatives and help translate powerful visions into enduring public experiences. Previous Next

- ORE-IDA, DELICIOUSLY PREDICTABLE
ORE-IDA < Back DELICIOUSLY PREDICTABLE Overview Service Outdoor Advertising, Special FX industry CPG markets Seattle Wall(s) 1 Wall impressions 436K+ We embarked on an exciting project where we transformed an 800-square-foot wallscape at Pike Place in Seattle into a captivating spectacle for Ore-Ida, a product of The Kraft Heinz Company . The client approached us with a bold vision: a mural that would reveal hidden text when exposed to rainwater. This presented a challenge as we had never worked with rain-activated paint before. Plus, this was a project that had never been done before ! Our dedicated team embraced the novelty and worked tirelessly researching and developing the concept and bringing it to life. Our journey started with researching various paint manufacturers, ultimately settling on a foreign hyrdro-paint for its transformative properties when exposed to water. Given the paint’s printing origins rather than paint, its proper application proved to be our first hurdle to ensure the test area amount we experimented with could scale up to a 40-foot-tall mural. We meticulously considered factors like surface texture, application method, and sun exposure for consistent results. Testing became paramount for this unique mural. We explored various application methods and layering techniques to optimize the paint's reaction to water. We discovered the ideal number of coats and drying time through trial and error, ensuring the mural's transformation upon exposure and its return to its original state when dry. https://vimeo.com/952388033 Careful planning was required due to the additional step of creating a hidden and revealed effect of Oreida’s creative copy. We began by painting the elements that would be visible when the mural was wet. We then applied the hydro-paint across the entire mural. This step had to be executed with precision to ensure an even coat, as any imperfections could affect the final outcome. Then, we painted any elements of the mural that would remain visible, whether wet or dry. By following these steps, we achieved a never-before-seen advertising mural, all captured on camera. Our team seamlessly transformed the creative with water exposure, creating a dynamic and engaging visual experience. What transpired exceeded even our wildest expectations. https://vimeo.com/952093903 Through meticulous planning, innovative techniques, and unwavering commitment to quality, we not only met Ore Ida's expectations but surpassed them, delivering a final product that seamlessly blended artistry and technology. The mural effectively conveyed Ore Ida's message that their fries are as reliably crispy as the rain in Seattle. Positioned in one of the city's busiest areas, the mural engaged over 436,000 viewers, inviting them to become active participants in an artistic and mesmerizing experience. This positive impact on the audience is a testament to the success of our project. More importantly, the campaign delivered incredible results for Kraft Heinz, achieving key performance indicators that highlight its remarkable impact: Household penetration increased by 9 points compared to Seattle's previous year during the flight. Market share grew by 1.5 points during the campaign period. Volume sales saw a significant boost of +21% during the flight. These outstanding results demonstrate the power of combining creative storytelling with strategic execution, proving that a well-crafted mural can leave a lasting impression while driving tangible business outcomes.
